Karen Pender from Paul James Hairdressing in New Redruth has been in the hairdressing industry for 35 years and doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon! She has had the privilege of travelling to numerous countries throughout her career to take part in hair education.
“It’s always exciting to travel to new countries not only to learn about new hair trends and receive invaluable knowledge from fellow hair stylists but also to immerse in the different cultures that they have to offer. The best part about gaining new techniques through international training is bringing it back to the salon to impart the knowledge to other stylists.”
“2018 has been ripe with international stylists visiting South Africa and I have been fortunate enough to train with four of them. I jump at these kinds of opportunities as I am constantly looking to better myself and stay on trend.”
Karen believes that education is the key to staying current and on trend. She finds that being in the industry for as long as she has serves as a massive advantage rather than a hindrance, as she is far more confident now than say ten years ago.
Karen finds herself tapping into all the resources available, especially social media to stay in touch with the latest fashion and hairstyles. The industry just keeps getting better, and it’s so much more exciting now than ever before.
“My favourite hairstyle is a graduated bob. I love this hair cut so much as it’s timeless and always makes a statement.”
We asked Karen to give us the top tips for keeping your hair in tip-top shape this summer.
The one thing that people neglect while on holiday is keeping their hair out of the sun.
Some tips to protecting your hair while on holiday are:
- Wearing a hat or bandana.
- Use a leave-in conditioner when going into the swimming pool or ocean.
- Always rinse the pool/ocean water out of your hair before heat styling.
Products that I recommend for maintaining your summer locks are:
- Redken One United Spray-On Leave-In Conditioner.
- Total Results Colour Obsessed Miracle 12 Treat – for colour treated hair.
- Total Results Mega Sleek Iron Smoother
- Pureology Colour Fanatic Spray
Karen started working at Paul James Hairdressing in 1995, at that stage there were only two salons. One in Alberton City called Foxy’s Hair Studio and one called Angles. There were had approximately 16 stylists working between the two salons.
Slowly but surely the brand became what it is today – comprising of 13 salons and over 100 staff members.
Karen has been a partner and director of Paul James Hairdressing in New Redruth Village since 2006.
“My advice to anyone looking to enter the hairdressing industry would be DO IT! Work hard, stay focused, don’t give up and have as much fun as possible. My last bit of advice is this, EDUCATION, EDUCATION, EDUCATION.”
